An evaluation essay aims at offering a personal view or point of view on a certain topic or an issue. In many ways, an evaluation essay resembles a critical review. To write an evaluation essay, you must critically examine both the pros and cons of the topic and present a fair evaluation about its merits. This can be done by first collecting relevant information from your resources. Then, depending on the topic you are going to write about, you have various alternatives to choose from. You can use primary sources such as primary books, journals, and internet websites, among others, as your main evidence. However, primary sources often lack credibility since the biases of the reviewers can inflate the value of the information they have collected. In contrast, secondary sources offer more reliable sources of information that are generally more reliable than primary sources. However, there are cases wherein primary and secondary sources complement each other; in this case, using both is preferred, especially if the topic is complex and lengthy. An evaluation essay usually starts with a discussion on the topic and the author’s point of view on it. The introduction provides the readers with the primary concept and the basic arguments in favor of or against the thesis statement. This section also gives examples from some well-known works on the same topic to illustrate how the author presents his views on the matter. After the introduction, the evaluation essay proceeds to present the main ideas and the main arguments in support of it. The thesis statement is the topic for discussion. The thesis represents a clear statement of what the author feels is important enough to discuss. It may be based on personal experience, general observation, or from a scientific study. The ideas expressed in the thesis statement support the main point; however, it should be interesting enough so as to hold the attention of the reader enough for him/her to pursue further information on it. After discussing the topic, the evaluation essay then goes on to provide evidence to support or to argue the main point. In essence, the evaluation essay aims to convince the reader that the main argument presented in the paper is correct. In most cases, the evaluation essay will present either supportive evidence or an argument against the thesis. As such, writing the evaluation essay requires careful planning and research. The essay must be able to communicate the ideas clearly and persuasively. There are different types of evaluation essay available; depending on how it is to be written and on what the topic is. For example, a discussion on the criteria of academic success uses four criteria to arrive at its conclusion. The different types of criteria are relevance, analysis, discussion, and evidence. A relevant evaluation essay considers all the aspects of the topic. Moreover, the writer must not overlook the various other sources of information regarding the topic. This is an essential step towards winning the Readers’ vote. Furthermore, the topic does not have to be fresh or new. The basic concept behind relevant evaluation essay is the facts and figures that support and further the argument of the paper. On the other hand, a discussion essay is about arguing a set of points, proving the thesis statement, and providing examples of situations where the value judgment is applicable. In essence, it is more concerned with facts and figures, rather than with the quality or the validity of these facts. Lastly, a proofreading or editing task is to check the paper for errors and omissions. The purpose of this task is to ensure the coherence of the whole document. In addition to this, when you write an evaluation essay, you need to consider the different factors affecting the overall quality of the paper.
